Into the Peruvian Amazon, Iquitos.
” We’re all Maestros, and we’re all apprentices. We all have something to teach each other, and we all have something to learn from each other. ” – Don Howard
Peru was the last country I visited before travel was shut down due to Covid. It has also been one of the most transforming trips I’ve ever taken.
Iquitos is known as the “capital of the Peruvian Amazon”. It is also the largest city in the world that cannot be reached by road – only accessible by the river and air. I spent 12 nights in the jungle, joining a group of 20+ other people from around the world who had come in to experience it as well. It was everything I could have imagined – and other things I can’t even begin to put in words. The magic of the jungle.
I stayed at a camp on the water, surrounded by a canopy of trees and animals. The sounds of the jungle were a constant flow, as if echoing back to each other. I would even hear the birds right outside my room, sounds I’ve never heard before – one was like a very loud, high pitched water drop. I rarely saw any animals other than birds. Our guides told us the animals were mostly afraid to be around people – funny, because I think that’s probably how most people might feel about seeing animals in the jungle. (though I would have *loved to have seen a jaguar.)
It was 13 days of reset – no email, very little phone, clean eating (our diet was mostly fruit, potato, vegetables and fish) and reconnecting with everything else – like life. 😉
